    まるでおばあちゃんが心を込めてつくってくれた料理のような味わい深さを持った声でウィザースプーンは40年代に数多くのヒットを放った。そのブルーズは「失うことに疲れ果てた男の歌」といった色合いを帯びていて、たしかに彼は吠えるように歌うのだが、それは声を潜めた咆哮といった雰囲気だった。そういった全盛期が過ぎ、50年代半ばごろにはもう姿を消してしまったと思われていた彼は、しかししばらくすると、ベン・ウェブスターやリチャード グルーヴ ホルムズ、バック・クレイトンといったジャズ界をリードするアーティストたちと共演するようになる。その結果、彼の音楽はさらに輝きを増し、評価も人気も甦った。ステージでのウィザースプーンの演奏ぶりはきわめてパワフルなもので、長いソロのあいだ、たとえ寝転がっていても、その存在が強烈に感じさせるほどのものだった。文字どおりソウルにあふれた音楽を歌いつづけた彼は、長く咽喉癌と闘ったのち、97年、その魂を我々に残して他界した。
