Red Hot Chili Peppersレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズ
アンソニー・キーディス（vo）、フリー（b）、ヒレル・スロヴァク（g）、ジャック・アイアンズ（dr）というメンバーで結成されたレッド・ホット・チリ・ペッパーズ。たび重なるメンバー・チェンジやドラッグ癖、ヒレルの死などさまざまな苦難を乗り越えながらも常に第一線で活躍。結成当初からファンクを取り入れたハイ・テンションなロックを繰り広げていたが、85年にファンク界の大御所ジョージ・クリントンのプロデュースでリリースした２ndアルバム『フリーキー・スタイリー』において確固たるレッチリ・サウンドが完成する。だが３rdアルバム発売後にヒレルがオーヴァードーズでこの世を去り、バンド最大の危機が訪れる。大きな穴を埋めるために起用されたのは、若き日のジョン・フルシアンテ。さらにこの危機のゴタゴタで脱退してしまったジャックの代わりにチャド・スミスが加入。なんとか４thアルバム『Mother’s Milk』をリリースし解散の危機を脱したのだった。そして、91年にはプロデューサーにリック・ルービンを迎え、最高傑作『ブラッド・シュガー・セックス・マジック』を発表。「ファンクとラップとメタルの融合」を才能あふれるテクニカルな演奏で難なく成し遂げ、のちにアメリカン・ロック・シーンを席捲する、ラップ・コア、ミクスチャー・ロックの布石となった。だがここで更なる問題が彼らを襲う。来日公演の直前に、ジョンがバンドから脱退してしまったのである。必死にギタリストを探した彼らが選んだのは、ジェーンズ・アディクションのギタリスト、デイヴ・ナヴァロだった。彼を迎えて『One Hot Minute』が制作されたが、結局97年にデイヴがまた脱退。事実上活動を休止せざるをえなくなる。
そんな彼らが再び集結したのは99年。アンソニー、フリー、チャド・スミス、ジョン・フルシャンテという鉄壁の布陣で、７枚目となるアルバム『カリフォルニケーション』をリリース、人生の酸いも甘いもかみ分けた彼らの哀愁に満ちたメロディ・ラインが炸裂し、世界的に大ヒットを収めたのだった。その後は固定メンバーでコンスタントに活動を展開している。06年にはなんと２枚組のオリジナル・アルバム『ステイディアム・アーケイディアム』を発表、周囲を驚かせた。
ジャム・セッションから曲を形成していくというスタイルは、彼らのラフでハッピーな雰囲気を物語っているが、哀愁漂うメロディが幾重にも重なり合うメロウな曲には、そんな雰囲気とは対極にある悲しみに満ちた心象風景も顕現されている。レッチリが日本人に圧倒的な人気を得ている理由は、ここにあるのかもしれない。
