ソドムと並ぶジャーマン・スラッシュ・メタルの代名詞、クリエイター。NWOBHM／デス・メタル／ハードコア・パンクなど多種多様なテイストを含有した、まったくオリジナルなヘヴィネスを追求している。
82年、ドイツはエッセンにて結成。85年に『ENDLESS PAIN』でデビュー。荒削りだが勢いに充ちたパワー・メタルを熱く鳴らす。以来、スラッシュ・メタル・シーンの牽引車的存在になっていった。そして、89年の『EXTREME AGGRESSION』あたりから、メロディックな要素が顕在化。高速サウンドは保持しつつも、さらなる音楽的な深みを獲得していく。『OUTCAST』（97年）、『ENDORAMA』（99年）ではドラマ性が格段にアップ、従来のスラッシュ・メタルという範疇では語りきれないサウンドを展開。今後も目が離せそうもない。
