キュートなルックスに、可愛さと色っぽさが同居した歌唱で、ジャズ・ファンだけでなくポップス・ファンからも人気が高いジョニー・ソマーズ。
10代の頃よりTV番組でタレントとして活動していたが、大学時代にクラブで歌っているところをトミー・オリヴァーにスカウトされ、彼のバンドの専属歌手となる。これをきっかけに59年にデビューを果たし、翌年「One Boy」がヒット。続く「Johnny Get Angry（内気なジョニー）」（61年）のビッグ・ヒットでその人気を決定付けた。
その後もジャズだけでなくボサ・ノヴァに接近するなど芸の幅を拡げていくが、結婚して３児をもうけたこともあり、70年代にはきらびやかな世界から姿を消してしまう。しかし80年代には復活し、クラブ・シンガーとして活動した。
