オーストラリアを代表するハード・ドライヴィン・R&Rバンド。強力無比でいながらシンプルなリフ主体の楽曲に、ダーティーな金切りヴォーカルを乗せて繰り出される世界観は、ロック界唯一無二といってよい。永遠に変らないだろうと言われるその音楽性には、ヘヴィ・メタル／ハード・ロック・ファンに加え、あのキース・リチャーズまでが賛辞を惜しまない。73年マルコム（g）、アンガス・ヤング（g）兄弟によってシドニーで結成。翌年、スコットランド出身のヴォーカリスト、ボン・スコットを引き入れ、75年アルバム『ハイ・ヴォルテージ』でデビューを飾る。アメリカ、イギリス、オーストラリアといった国々でツアーをくり返すことによりライヴ・バンドとしての評価を次第に高めてながら、『ロック魂』、ライヴ・アルバム『ギター殺人事件』をたて続けにリリース。79年には最高傑作『地獄のハイウェイ』で世界的成功を収めるが、80年ボン・スコットが飲酒事故で死亡するという悲劇に襲われる。バンドは存続を危ぶまれるが、新ヴォーカリスト、ブライアン・ジョンソンを迎え再出発する。同年リリースのアルバム『バック・イン・ブラック』は全世界で1500万枚のセールスを記録し、続く『悪魔の招待状』も、折りからのヘヴィ・メタルブームに乗り大ヒットとなる。80年代中盤には一時的にセールスは落ち込んだが、終盤には復活。90年代も順調に活動を続け、00年には『スティッフ・アッパー・リップ』をリリースし、虚飾を削ぎ落としたシンプルなロックン・ロールを武器に活躍している。
