    Gil Evansギル・エヴァンス

    音の魔術師との異名をとり、マイルス・デイヴィスと共にモード・ジャズを創造したギル・エヴァンス。エヴァンスがアレンジャーを務めたクロード・ソーンヒル楽団のレコードをデイヴィスが聴き、興味をもったことで自身の９重奏団のアレンジを依頼。そこから２人のコラボレーションが始まり、大傑作『クールの誕生』が完成した。その後は個々の活動を展開するが、55年頃から交流を再開し、エヴァンスのオーケストラをバックにデイヴィスが演奏する『マイルス・アヘッド』や『スケッチ・オブ・スペイン』を発表。木管や金管の響きを、従来のビッグ・バンドの趣とは異なるモード・ジャズをテーマにしたこの２作は、50年代を代表するジャズ作品となる。
    さらに50年代後半には、エヴァンスは自らのオーケストラやビッグ・コンボを率いて活動を開始。霧の中から浮かび上がってくるような幻想的音世界を展開した。また70年代に入ると、新たな世界を呈示すべくエレクトリック・サウンドやロックのリズムを大胆に導入し、ジミ・ヘンドリックスとの共演も計画されるが、彼の急死により他のギタリストを起用し、『プレイズ・ジミ・ヘンドリックス』を発表した。80年代になっても自らのリハーサル・バンドを率いてクラブ・スウィート・ベイジルに定期出演していたが、88年に突然死亡。しかし、その間にいくつかのライヴ作品が制作されている。
