    近年、ポップ王国と騒がれ、日本人にとって馴染み深い国となったスウェーデン。カーディガンズをはじめとする、トーレ・ヨハンソン（日本でもカジヒデキやボニー・ピンクなどのアルバム・プロデュースで有名）が築き上げたマジカルでバブルガムな音世界を追随するかのように現れたのが、ザ・メリーメーカーズだ。
    80年代初頭（当時10歳）から音楽活動を始め、91年にデビューを果たしたのだからキャリアとしては申し分ない。彼らのサウンドは、ビートルズにたとえればポール・マッカートニーを彷彿させる、甘いメロディをもったものである。加えて、ぬくもりに満ちたヴォーカル、美しいコーラス・ワーク——すべてが、まばゆいかぎり。過去の至宝を重んじ、「いかなる時もポップでありたい」という純粋な気持ちで届けられる楽曲に、多くのリスナーが至福な一時を感じるハズだ。
    とくに、敬愛するジェリーフィッシュのアンディ・スターマーをプロデューサーに迎えた、美メロ満載なアルバム『バブルガン』（97年）は彼らの最高傑作と言えるだろう。
