80年代の中頃、ニュージャージー州ホーボーケン出身の３人が、多くの人のハートをつかむ。ギターとオルガンにリードされた、クリエイティヴでこだわりのある音。音楽評論家が選んだ今年のベスト10などの常連である。トレンドに反抗した挑戦的で人を惹きつけるポップ・ミュージックをリリースしつづけ、超熱狂的ファンもいるあたり、現代のヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドと言えなくもない。アイラ・カプランがけたたましく斬新なギター・ワークを聴かせ、彼の妻ジョージア・ハブリーの崇高で天使のような歌声が溶け込んで、80〜90年代におけるインディー・ロックのベストに輝く。92年の『メイ・アイ・シング・ウィズ・ミー』は、カプランがフィードバックに集中した結果、ヴォリュームがあつくヘヴィーな感じに仕上がっている。ここ10年くらいで他のバンドも同じ方向に進むのを見てとると、ヨ・ラ・テンゴはこことばかりにそのトレンドを振りはらい、たてつづけにレコーディング。アルバムごとに静寂と変化が増していくのであった。『Electr-o-pura』で聴かせるヘヴィーなオルガン、『アイ・キャン・ヒア・ザ・ハート・ビーティング・アズ・ワン』の完璧な静寂。すでに評論家の間でもラジオのリスナーの間でも同様に広まりつつあったヨ・ラ・テンゴの評判を、このふたつのアルバムが決定的にしたのである。
