Ugly Ducklingアグリー・ダックリング
オールドスクール・ヒップホップを現代風に昇華させたアーティストといえば、真っ先に思いつくのはジュラシック５だろう。しかし、西海岸はロングビーチ出身のアグリー・ダックリングも彼らに負けてない実力の持ち主だ。99年にデビュー・アルバム『フレッシュ・モード』を、翌00年には２ndアルバム『ジャーニー・トゥ・エニウェア』を、03年には３rdアルバム『テイスト・ザ・シークレット』をリリースしたアグリー・ダックリングは、トラック・メイカーのヤング・アインシュタイン、ラッパーのディジーとアンディからなる３人組。ヤング・アインシュタインが、サンプリングという王道のトラック制作手法を使い、ネタの素材感を活かしながらゴキゲンなヒップホップ・チューンを作り上げ、そしてラッパーのふたりが、オールドスクールを意識したファンキーなノリのMCを見せつける。それらのトラックとかけ合いラップのアンサンブルが生み出すエナジーは相当なもの。
