    The Weaversザ・ウィーヴァーズ

    モダン・フォークの歴史はこのグループから始まった。フォーク・ゴッド、ピート・シーガーが率いたウィーヴァーズ。
    男性３人、女性１人という編成で結成されたこのグループは、50年のデビュー・シングルでレッドベリーのカヴァー「Goodnight Irene」が当時としては破格の200万枚を売り上げ、それまでトラディショナルであったフォークをポップとして受け入れさせるのに成功する。しかし、マッカーシー上院議員による"赤狩り"旋風に巻き込まれ、活動は頓挫。52年には解散の憂き目を見る。
    その後55年、カーネギー・ホールでの感動的な再結成コンサートをきっかけに活動を再開し、多くのフォロワーを生み出した。58年にピート・シーガーは脱退してしまうが、後任にタリアーズのエリック・ダーリングを迎え、グループは活動を存続。フォークの名盤といわれる作品をいくつか発表している。
