    The Melodiansザ・メロディアンズ

    ロック・ステディ〜レゲエへの過渡期を語るうえで、決して欠かすことのできない重要なコーラス・グループ。ブレント・ダウ、トニー・ブレヴェット、トレヴァー・マクノートンによって結成された。60年頃からジャマイカのアマチュア・タレント・コンサートで歌い始めたが、彼らに初レコーディングのチャンスが訪れたのは66年の４月。だがコクソンの＜スタジオ・ワン＞で４曲レコーディングしたものの、結果的に発売されたのは２曲だけだった。
    67〜68年には、デューク・リードの＜トレジャー．アイル＞に移り、現在でも歌い継がれるロック・ステディの名曲をリリース。——これが大ヒットし、グループは一気に表舞台へと飛躍する。職人芸とも言うべき寸分たがわぬ緻密なハーモニー・ワークは「You Don't Need Me」「I Will Get Along」「I Caught You」「Come On Little Girl」らのヒット曲で遺憾なく発揮されている。また、ソニア・ポッティンガーの元で、ジャマイカのナーサリー・ライム（伝承童謡）を元ネタにした「Little Nut Tree」、さらに「Swing And Din」の２大マッシヴ・ヒットを輩出。翌年にはプロデューサー、レスリー・コングとのコラボレーションに着手し、第一弾としてリリースされたシングル「Sweet Sensation」で世界的な成功への一歩を踏み出したのである。
    続くルーツ・レゲエ・テイストのシングル「Rivers Of Babylon」は、イギリスだけで７万5000枚を売り上げたと言われているが、その後、リー・ペリー、ハリー・Ｊ・ダイナミックなどのプロダクションでレコーディングを重ねるも、グループは74年に解散。ブレント、トニーはそれぞれソロに転向したが、何度か再結成をしてはレコーディング／ライヴを行っている。
