    The Lords Of The New Churchザ・ローズ・オブ・ニュー・チャーチ

    ザ・ローズ・オブ・ザ・ニュー・チャーチは、元デッド・ボーイズのスティーヴ・ベイターズ（vo）／元ダムドのブライアン・ジェイムズ（g）／元シャム69のデイヴ・トレガンナ（b）／元バラクーダズのニック・ターナー（dr）という、まさにオールスター級の豪華メンバーで81年に結成された英米混成の、いわば「パンクのスーパー・グループ」である。
    78年初頭のジョニー・ロットンのセックス・ピストルズ脱退、ダムドの解散をきっかけに、オリジナル・パンクのムーヴメントは現象としては急速に終息に向かった。ポスト・パンクの動きはニュー・ウェイヴとして洗練化／実験化するか、ハードコア・パンクとして過激化するかの二極分化に進みつつあったが、ロードの結成はそうした当時のシーンの状況を背景にしている。
    とはいえ（あるいは、であるからこそ）ロードの音楽は単なるオリジナル・パンクの再現にとどまらず、彼らなりのポスト・パンク観を反映したものになっている。ストゥージズやニューヨーク・ドールズなどの元祖パンク的なワイルドなロックンロールを軸に、当時勃興しつつあったゴス／ポジティヴ・パンク的な耽美性を掛け合わせたような音楽を展開したのである。これは当時それなりの新鮮味をもって受け止められた。ロードを形作った要素はダムド、デッド・ボーイズらから少しずつ受け継いだもので、その意味でもそうしたオリジナル・パンク勢からは一歩前に進んだものと評価できるだろう。いわば、のちにカルト（サザン・デス・カルト）が達成したもののプロト・タイプ的な音楽を、ロードはやっていたと言えるかもしれない。
    ロードは５枚のアルバムを残し88年に解散した。代表作はやはり１stアルバム『The Lord Of The New Church』（82年）だろう。なお、ヴェイターズは90年にパリで事故死している。　（小野島 大）
