    The Hi-Lo'sザ・ハイローズ

    ハイローズは、ヴォーカル・グループによる音楽の発展において重要な役割を担った。彼らの人気のピークは50年代後半にコロムビアでレコーディングを行っていた頃であり、ロック全盛時代が訪れる直前のこの時期にヒット・チャートでそこそこ成功をおさめていた。当時のアルバムで彼らはビッグバンドを従え、先進的なヴォーカル・ハーモニーをジャズやポップのスタンダード・ナンバーに活用していた。現代の若者が聴けば時代遅れでダサいサウンドに聴こえるかもしれないが、その最大の魅力はポップ感覚あふれる楽曲の枠組みの中に、一風変わった響きや予想を裏切る奇抜なアレンジを持ち込むことの出来る才能だった（この資質は熱烈なファンだったビーチボーイズのブライアン・ウィルソンがしっかりと受け継いでいる）。ハイローズは特にユーモア感覚のあるヴォーカル・ミュージックのファン、にとっては新たな発見の宝庫である。
