    ソニー・ロリンズはジャズ界きっての鋭いウィット感の持ち主かも知れない。音楽的には50年代前半の荒々しい音色でスイングするコールマン・ホーキンスのスタイルと、チャーリー・パーカーの革新的なビバップ・スタイルを融合した独自のスタイルを確立した。しかし、パーカーがメロディが舞い上がるような演奏で感情表現の根源を探求したのとは違い、ロリンズの際限なく続く即興演奏は一種皮肉めいた印象を伝えた。ブロードウェイ・ミュージカルのヒット曲、「ショウほど素敵な商売はない」などではバップやスイング、そしてミュージカル・ナンバーなどではもう使い古されたフレーズを取り上げ、それらを徹底的に分解した上で使用した。その意図はメロディとリズムが持つ可能性の限界を探り、慣用句そのものをからかうことにあった。新たな可能性を探り続ける中で彼の演奏は時折、美学的なミニマリズムにその表現を求めることがある。今ではスタンダード・ナンバーとされている、彼自身の筆による「セント・トーマス」では目眩がするほど入り組んだフレーズの迷路の中を、まったく同じ２つの音を延々と交互に吹き鳴らしている。ロリンズの芸術の深みに並ぶことの出来るインプロヴァイザーは希である。
