内に情熱と狂気をはらみつつ、ダークな叙情性を前面に押し出すギタリスト。ジム・ホール的な和声フレーズと、ジョン・マクラフリン的な前衛プレイを併せもち、70〜80年代のジャズ／フュージョン・シーンで猛威をふるっていた。
ジョニー・ハモンド・スミス（org）のバンドでプロ活動を開始し、74年に初リーダー作『Timeless』をリリース。既に思索的なカラーが見え隠れしている。以後、自己のスタイルを完成させた『John Abercrombie』（84年）、ギター・トリオの金字塔『John Abercrombie、Marc Johnson、Peter Erskine』（88年）など数々の名盤を発表して、その地位を踏み固めた。近年は、またオルガンとの共演が多くなっているが、そこはアバークロンビー、ファンキー・ジャズではありません。やっぱり知的で暗くて……それでいて美しい。
