    Jim Whiteジム・ホワイト

    フロリダ出身のジム・ホワイトは、サーファーでありファッション・モデルもこなすらしい。これが日本だったら、女性が放っておかないだろうし、一席ラップでもブれば、発泡酒のCMくらいには出演できるかもしれない。しかし、彼の視線の先にあるのは、サンタモニカの白い砂浜でもヴェニス・ビーチの水着ギャルでもない。南部のジメっとしたスワンプや、プア・ホワイトの悲劇的な生活——限りなくアメリカン・ゴシックな世界だ。
    幼い頃よりゴスペルを聴いていたというから、相当の変り種だが、元トーキング・へッズのデヴィット・バーンに拾われ、97年に彼の主宰する＜ルアカ・ボップ＞から『ロング—アイド・ジーザス』でデビュー。見事にその個性が花開く。カントリー／ブルース／ソウルなどをルーツにしながらも、そこにとどまらない自由な発想でサウンドを構築。ひしゃげた音像の中、浮遊するようなホワイトのヴォーカルは、さながらクロスロードを彷徨う亡霊のようだ。
    そして01年、大傑作『ノー・サッチ・プレイス』を発表。プロデュースにシャーデーなどを手掛けたアンドリュー・ヘイルや日本の誇る鈴木惣一郎を迎え、前作をさらに発展させ、現在進行形のルーツ・ミュージックを呈示してみせた。一食抜いてでも聴くべし!!
