    ブライアン・エプスタインがビートルズに続いてマネージメント契約を結んだのが、このグループ。
    スキッフル・グループを前身に結成され、リヴァプールのローカル・シーンではビートルズと人気を二分したという。そして63年、これまたビートルズでお馴染みのジョージ・マーティン・プロデュースのもと「How Do You Do It？」でデビューを果たし、以降３曲連続ヒット・チャートのNo.１を獲得するという快挙を成し遂げた。
    彼らの音楽性は典型的なマージー・ビートだが、当時としては斬新だったストリングスを導入したバラード「You'll Never Walk Alone」（64年）を発表するなど、新たな地平を拓いた功績は大きいだろう。
