    ジム・クウェスキン＆ザ・ジャグ・バンド解散後のジェフ・マルダーは、同じくメンバーだったマリアと結婚してウッドストックに居を移す。そしてグループ時代に培った音楽観を元手に、夫婦でさらに深いレベルでのルーツへの探求に取りかかった。
    まず手始めに、『Pottery Pie』（70年）を制作。アーリー・ジャズ／ブルース／ゴスペル／トラディショナルなど幅広いジャンルからのカヴァーで構成されたこの作品は、それでいてロック世代に向けてのコンテンポラリーなアレンジが施され、伝統に新たな息吹を吹き込むことに成功している。加えて交互にリードをとる２人のヴォーカルも味わい深いが、このセッションで出会ったギタリスト、エイモス・ギャレットの独創的なギター（「Georgia on My Mind」の必殺ギター・ソロを聴け！）が、サウンドに深みを与えているのも見逃せない。
    74年の２作目『Sweet Potatoes』でも、同趣向のサウンドを展開しているが、こちらの方はよりアット・ホーム的なリラックス・ムードが漂う名作だ。
    このアルバムを発表直後にジェフとマリアは離婚。現在に至るまで、それぞれソロ・アーティストとしての道を歩んでいる。
