    "一発屋"とまではいわないが、限りなくそれに近い……。極めて短命に終わったキワモノ集団。
    前身バンド、ビッグ・イン・ジャパンがリヴァプールで結成されたのは80年のことだ。その後フランキー・ゴーズ・トゥ・ハリウッドと改名し、トレヴァー・ホーンの主宰する＜ZTT＞レーベルと契約。１stシングル「リラックス」（83年）は、メンバー全員がゲイという事実／コミカルなプロモーション・ヴィデオも相まって、英米両ヒット・チャートのNo.１を獲得する。続く２枚組アルバム『プレジャードーム』（84年）は、瞬く間にチャートを駆け昇り、同年の２ndシングル「トゥ・トライブス」も大ヒットを記録。当時最新鋭の機材サンプラーを駆使したサウンド（ちなみにサンプルされたのは、レッド・ツェッペリンのジョン・ボーナムのドラム）は、斬新なダンス・ミュージックとして熱狂的に受け入れられた。また、セックス・ピストルズを売り出したマルコム・マクラーレンのような役割をトレヴァー・ホーンが担い、７インチ／12インチではヴァージョンの違うシングルを乱発、「フランキー……といった」ロゴをあしらったＴシャツが爆発的なセールスを記録——フランキー・ゴーズ・トゥ・ハリウッドを社会現象にまで昇華させたのだ。
    しかし、津波のように押し寄せたブームも、まるで何事もなかったかのごとく引き、２ndアルバム『リヴァプール』（86年）をリリースするものの、さして話題になることもなくバンドはそのまま解散してしまう。
    そして00年、トランス・テクノのジャム＆スプーンなど新進気鋭のアーティストをリミキサーに迎えたリミックス集『リラックス・リミックス』をリリース。解散から14年経ち、寝かせ頃として最適な今、フランキー・ゴーズ・トゥ・ハリウッドのナンバーは新鮮なものとして耳に響くだろう。
