Denise LaSalleデニス・ラサール
ミシシッピ出身ながらシカゴを拠点とし、録音になると再び南部に舞い戻る。そんな活動スタイルが、単なる歌い上げ系の人とは一線を画す、泥臭さと洗練度がいい按配で交じり合った芸風を作り上げたのだろう。
ティーンの頃よりプロ歌手としての活動を始め、＜チェス＞などでシングルをリリースするが、本格的なデビューとなったのは、メンフィスのハイ・スタジオに赴いて録音された『Trapped By a Thing Called Love』（71年）。スロウ・ミディアム・テンポの楽曲中心で、熟練のハイ・サウンドをバックに、ふくよかな歌唱の魅力が十二分に発揮された傑作である。その後も南部を中心としたレコーディング活動を行ない、ディスコなどを取り入れつつもキャリアを積んでいく。そうした息の長い活動の裏にはどんな流行にも微動だにしない一本芯の通った歌唱力があったからに他ならない。
そして80年代には＜マラコ＞と契約し、Z.Z.ヒルと共にレーベル躍進の原動力となった。この時代にも佳作は多く、『Lady in the Street』や『Right Place, Right Time』などは熱心なサザン・ソウル・ファン以外にもオススメだ。
