    Cowboy Junkiesカウボーイ・ジャンキーズ

    氷と雪の国、カナダ。アメリカと地続きでありながら異国というこの国は、ザ・バンドやニール・ヤングといった米国文化に憧憬を抱きつつも、ヨソ者感覚でそれを料理し、新たな地平を開拓したアーティストを数多く輩出している。カウボーイ・ジャンキーズもそんな先達の遺産を継承するグループだ。
    ティミンズ兄弟を中心として70年代後半に結成。初期こそブルースやカントリーの古典をニューウェイヴ的な解釈でカヴァーしていたが、88年に発表されたオリジナル中心の『トリニティ・セッション』（たった250ドルの費用で制作された）が、口コミでじわじわと売れ、最終的には25万枚のヒットを記録。その名を知らしめることになる。ルーツを探求して幽玄の境地に辿り着いてしまったようなアンビエンタブルな音空間を、紅一点マーゴ・ティミンズの物憂げな声が浮遊。彷徨える南部の亡霊たちを現在に甦らせた。
    以後もゴシック感覚溢れるルーツ・ミュージックを奏で、コンスタントにアルバムをリリース。爆発的なヒットを飛ばすことはないが、現在も根強いファンに支えられている。
