    Clarence Whiteクラレンス・ホワイト

    クラレンス・ホワイトはカントリー音楽史上、もっとも才能豊かで、もっとも過小評価をされているギタリストのひとり。彼はケンタッキー・カーネルズやナッシュヴィル・ウェストの一員としての活動を通じ、意識せずしてカントリー・ロックの礎を築く手助けをした。68年の秋、ホワイトはザ・バーズに参加、平行してセッション・ミュージシャンとしての活動も続け、ギタリスト、ジーン・パーソンズの手を借りて汎宇宙的なアメリカン・ミュージックの発展に助力したのだった。キャリアの晩年にはカントリー／フォーク／ブルーグラスのバンド、ミュールスキナーに参加。音速を超えるがごときピッキングの技を十分に披露した。
    そしてクラレンス・ホワイトを語る際、欠かせないのが、ジーン・クラークと共に開発したセカンド・ストリング・ショルダーストラップ・ベンダーという独自のチョーキング装置である。この装置を効果的に使用し、数々の名演を生み出していった。さらに、彼の優れた編曲能力も忘れてはならない。例えば、ザ・バーズが演奏した古い伝承歌で、ホワイトの代表作として知られる「ファーザー・アロング」などは彼が編曲を手がけている。酔払い運転の車との交通事故が、弱冠29歳でホワイトの命を奪ってしまった。
