79年にデビューしたシンディ・ブレンズは音楽批評家ばかりでなく仲間のアーティストたちに広く認められており、最新作では仲間のボニー・レイットやルシンダ・ウィリアムスがゲストとして参加している。ブレンズはまるでブルース・スプリングスティーンのような曲作りをし、ザ・ローリング・ストーンズをバックに従えているかのようなパフォーマンスを披露。当時の女性ロッカー像を大きく変革した。後にジョーン・ジェットやリズ・フェアのような“タフ”な女性アーティストたちが登場するものの、ブレンズのがむしゃらで知的なロック魂は相変わらず健在だ。時間そして長いキャリアは彼女の曲作りの才能はさらに高められたと言えるだろう。最新アルバム『サムウェア・ビトゥイーン・ヘヴン・アンド・アース』ではブレンズのがんで亡くなった娘のジェシーがテーマとなっているが、意外にも娘の死への絶望感を吐き出すのではなく、その生を称える作品に仕上がっている。
