ウエスト・コーストから米国南部ナッシュビル・カントリーへの返答——それがナッシュビル・ウエスト——俗にいうベイカーズフィールド・サウンドだ。
テキサス出身のバック・オウエンズは、ホンキー・トンクやヒルビリー・バップ（共にテキサスの伝統的なカントリーの形態）に、ロック／R&Bのバック・ビートを導入し、新しいタイプのカントリーを呈示。「ラヴズ・ゴナ・ライヴ・ヒア」（63年）、「トゥギャザー・アゲイン」（64年）、「ウェイティン・イン・ユア・ウェルフェア・ライン」（66年）、「サムズ・プレイス」（67年）、「トール・ダーク・ストレンジャー」（69年）——などのヒットを続けざまに放ち、西海岸カントリーを一挙にメイン・ストリームに押し上げた。特に「アクト・ナチュラリー」（63年）は、ビートルズにカヴァーされるなどロック・フィールドにも強烈にアピールする。さらにバック・バンド、バッカルーズのテレキャスター・ギター２本の絡みを軸に、ぺダル・スティールを取り入れたパワフルなサウンドを展開。それは後のフライング・ブリトウ・ブラザーズに受け継がれ、カントリー・ロックにも大きな影響を与えた。
70年代には一時引退同然になるものの、88年には、オウエンズをリスペクトして止まないドワイト・ヨ—カムに熱烈なラヴ・コールを受け、「ストリート・オブ・ベイカーズフィールド」で客演。大いに健在ぶりをアピールした。
