キャプテン・ビーフハートの傑作アルバム『トラウト・マスク・レプリカ』はダダイズムの極地か、それとも60年代の過度なサイケデリックのパロディか——。リハーサルを嫌い、シンコペートしたリズムを好んだドン・ヴァン・ブリートの奇怪なソングライティング術によって、このアルバム（そして全てのアルバム）は非常に不思議な作品に仕上がっている。一聴しただけでは非常に理解し難い音楽だが、評論家の間では太鼓判を押された上、それはモダン・ロックに計り知れない影響を与えたのだ。ビーフハート直伝のミュージシャンにはトム・ウェイツらがいるが、ドン・ヴァン・ブリート作品と共通項がないと思われるアーティストでも、彼に深く感化されたと自認する人は多い。
