    もし彼らがいなかったら、ウディ・ガスリーもボブ・ディランも存在しなかったかもしれない——と言っても過言ではないほど、現在のポピュラー・ミュージック・シーンに多大なる影響を与えたカーター・ファミリー。
    カーター夫妻と従妹メイベルから成るこのグループは、トラディショナルやゴスペルをレパートリーに30年代から活動を始め、オリジナルの「ワイルドウッド・フラワー」「ワリード・マン・ブルース」といったヒットを放つ。これらの曲は、いまだにカヴァーするアーティストが絶えないほどスタンダード化している。
    彼らの魅力は低音を活かした独特のハーモニー、そして、メイベルのギター・ワークにあると言っていいだろう。後に"カーター・ファミリー・ピッキング"と呼ばれるようになるこの奏法は、ベース・ラインとコード・ストロークを巧みに織り交ぜ、メロディをくっきりと浮かび上がらせることに成功。カントリー／ブルーグラスに欠かせないものとなった。
    親類、子供たちをメンバーとして加入させながら、60年代までバンドを存続させたカーター・ファミリーは、ジミー・ロジャースと共にアメリカン・ミュージックの原点と言うことができよう。
