    悲しいソニック・ユース——ブラック・ハート・プロセッションの曲を聴いて真っ先に浮かぶ言葉だ。ロックのフォーマットをズタズタに解体することによって虚無感を爆発させるソニックスに比べ、このBHPはロックのもつ悲哀の感覚をことさらに強調する。そして、暗澹としたエモーションを静かにたゆたわせるのである。
    97年、スリー・マイル・パイロットのメンバーを中心に結成。まるで眠りの深淵へ落ちていくかのような歌声。ピアノやオルガンの音色が印象的な陰鬱で悲しいメロディ。それらが渾然一体となって繰り広げるメロウなハードコア・ソングは、リスナーの心象を見透かしながら鳴り響く。そして、"優しく慰める"というより"優しく絶望を告げられる"ような虚しさを与えてくれるのだ。まったくもって、悲しい音楽である。
