    Son Voltサン・ヴォルト

    オルタナティヴ・カントリーの源流を作ったアンクル・テュペロのメンバー、ジェフ・トゥイーディーとジェイ・ファーラーは94年のグループ解散後、別々の道を歩み始める。トゥイーディーは、カントリー色をよりポップに推し進めたバンド、ウィルコを結成。一方ファーラーは、サン・ヴォルトを始動させる。
    95年の１stアルバム『トレイス』は、アンクル・テュペロ時代の流れを汲み、カントリー／ルーツ・ロックをベースにした開放的なサウンドを呈示。スティール・ギターやフィドルが美しく響くフォーキーなナンバーから、ニール・ヤングを彷彿させる荒くれ轟音ギターを炸裂させたR&Rチューンまでを聴かせた。ファーラーのしわがれた歌声も実に味わい深い。
    以後、『ストレイトウェイズ』（97年）、『ワイド・スウィング・トレモロ』（98年）と作品を重ねるごとに、そのサウンドは円熟へと向かっている。
