Paul Gaytenポール・ゲイトゥン
50年代に活躍したニューオーリンズのバンド・リーダー／アレンジャー／ピアニスト、ポール・ゲイトゥン。30年代よりコンボを率い、40年代後半には女性シンガー＝アーニー・ローリーを育て「カッティン・アウト」「アイル・ネヴァー・ビー・フリー」などのヒット・ソングを世に放った。また自身もシンガー兼ピアニストとしてレコード制作に勤しんでおり、ジャズ・バラードをしっとり聴かせる一方で弾けるようなジャンプ・ナンバーを炸裂させたりと、ニューオーリンズ・ミュージックの多面性を披露した。リー・アレン／アルヴィン“レッド”タイラー／アール・パーマーといった当代随一の手練れミュージシャンたちが集結した演奏陣にしても素晴らしく、50年代ニューオーリンズR＆Bの最高峰に位置していたのは間違いない。
