オズモンズ以降、そしてバックストリート・ボーイズ以前の話になるが、ニュー・エディションは80年代の未成年の女の子たちにバブルガム・ポップを送り届けたアイドル・グループだった。ラルフ・トレスヴァントの声変わり前の綿菓子のように甘い声は、若き日のマイケル・ジャクソンと匹敵するほどで、実際ニュー・エディションの名前が売れるまではジャクソン・ファイヴの初期のデモ・テープだと勘違いされるほどだった。90年代に入るとニュー・エディションは自分たちのティーン・アイドル的なイメージに嫌気がさし、より大人なニュー・ジャック・スウィングのスタイルへと転向していった。バンド解散後、ベル・ビヴ・デヴォー、ボビー・ブラウン、ジョニー・ギル、そしてラルフ・トレスヴァントの旧メンバーはソロ活動を通じ、それぞれ大成功を収めている。
