    80年代カントリーの代表選手である。しかしその地位に辿りつくまでに気の遠くなるような下積み生活を送り、デビューしたのが39歳という超遅咲き。
    81年に初シングルを出して以来、83〜86年にかけて７曲のNo.１ヒットを生み出しスターダムへとノシ上がったグリーンウッドであるが、その特徴といえばAOR的な楽曲にある。カントリーをベースにしながらも、あくまでポップとして通用するソングライティングが成功の秘訣。また愛国者（右翼？）としても有名で、大韓航空機撃墜事件に触発されて書いた「God Bless The U.S.A.」（84年）は、その後の湾岸戦争時にもラジオなどでヘヴィ・ローテーションされ、"第二のアメリカ国歌"とまで呼ばれるようになった。
    現在も他アーティストに楽曲提供するソングライター、またCMソング歌手としても活躍している。
