    35年、ニューオリンズ出身。セッション・ピアニストとしてロイ・ブラウンやパーシー・メイフィールドらのバックを務めたあと、57年に当時の雇い主であったロイド・プライスの「ジャスト・ビコウズ」を借り受けるかたちでデビュー。続く「ショート・ファット・ファニー」がヒット・チャート上位にランク・インされて以来、次々にヒット・ソングを飛ばし、所属レーベル＜SPECIALITY＞においてリトル・リチャードと並ぶ稼ぎ頭となった。そんなウィリアムズの魅力といえば、飄々とした歌いっぷりに尽きるだろう。リチャードのように狂気で勝負するのではなく、どの曲にもノヴェルティ感覚タップリのユーモアが散りばめられているのだ。また、彼の放ったヒット・ソングは特にUKで人気が高く、ビートルズが「ディジー，ミス・リジー」「スロウ・ダウン」「バッド・ボーイ」の３曲をカヴァーしたことは有名な話。
