    Jay McShannジェイ・マクシャン

    ピアニストであり、時にはヴォーカリストでもあったジェイ・マクシャンは、山の手の洗練さと、下町の土くささを併せ持つ、ジャンプ・ブルーズのビッグ・バンドを率いていた。このオーケストラは第２次世界大戦後は思ったほどの成果を得ることができず、マクシャンはLAのジャズ・シーンにその身を定着させるようになる。彼の存在はジャズ史に於いては、チャーリー・パーカーが60年代に国際舞台で再評価される以前、若き日の彼を雇ったという脚注として語られる程度となっていった。しかし、晩年の作品では素晴らしく、味わいのあるトリオや小編成のグループでの即興演奏を聴くことができる。また、レトロ好みのスイング・ファンには、アーシーなヴォーカリスト、ジミー・ウィザースプーンをフィーチャーして40年代に残したレコーディングを聴くことをお勧めする。マクシャンは素晴らしいジャズ作品を数多く録音すとともに、ロックン・ロールの礎を築く功績も残した。
