イギリスからこんなにもエクスペリメンタルなバンドが出てくるとは意外だったなあ、ベータ・バンドと彼らゴメス———。怪獣でも、中日ドラゴンズの外人４番打者でもないゴメスは、98年にシングル「78ストーン・ウォブル」でデビュー。その後に発表されたアルバム『ブリング・イット・オン』は、同じデビュー組のみならずビッグ・ネームも食っちゃう勢いで大ブレイクし、「学生風メガネ君バンドここにあり！」とシーンに衝撃を与える。
「UKからのベックへの回答」ともとれるフォーキーなサウンドは、精緻なバンド・アンサンブルによる重層的なグルーヴの上でサイケデリアに昇華。また、ストーン・ローゼスが舌打ちして悔しがるであろうアシッド感たっぷりのヒップ・ホップ風ドラム・ループを起用するあたりは、先見性も窺える。
こういうバンドが突如現れるからUKシーンから目が離せないし、音楽って面白いと思うのだ。これ以後彼らはコンスタントに新作をリリースしており、04年の『Split The Difference』でも、よりパワー・アップしたキテレツPOPを展開、シーンを驚かせた。
