Galaxie 500ギャラクシーファイヴハンドレッド
レコード・コレクターやインディーズ・ポップ愛好家の間では伝説的なバンドとして知られている、今はなきギャラクシー500。彼らは80年代後半にその哀しげなサウンドで、当時蔓延していた陽気なポップに終止符を打った。
ネオ・サイケデリカ流行りだった当時のロサンゼルス・アンダーグラウンド・シーンの空気感を取り入れた、どこか憂鬱なサウンド。幻想的なコード進行をシンプルにアレンジし、ディーン・ウェアハムのぶっきらぼうな歌いまわしやファルセット・ヴォイスがその上をゆっくりと進んでいく——そして、脆弱ながらも高いエネルギーをもつ物悲しい世界が誕生するのだ。
のちにディーンは高い評価を得たインディー・ポップ・バンド、チルズやフィーリーズのメンバーとルナを結成。ルナのキラキラ光るギター・ポップの中には、ギャラクシー500に見られた緊張感や絶望は微塵もない。
