この人がピアノを弾く姿は、一見の価値あり。手元なんか全く見ず、見るのはお客さんの顔。ニカッと笑って、楽しそぉ〜に嬉しそぉ〜に弾きまくる。手で演奏するというより表情で演奏するタイプであり、ピアニストというより真のエンターテイナーだ。しかも激ウマ!! ストライド奏法（ズンチャ奏法）によって、左手をジャストのタイミングで弾きつつ、メロディを弾く右手は自由自在にタイム感をズラす（また、その逆も可能）。多くの場合は後ろにもたり、“ビハインド・ザ・ビート”と呼ばれていた。そして、右と左がおのおのソロをとったり、リードをとる手が入れ替わったりと変幻自在に動き回るのだ。
21年に生まれ、ジャズ・ピアノの先駆けだったガーナーは、実は譜面が読めない。３歳からピアノに触れるが、まったくの独学であったという。しかし、「ミスティ」という超名曲を生み出した彼は、感性で生きる本物のアーティストであったといえよう。
