    ボーダーレス音楽・テクス・メクスの雄、ダグ・サームは、41年テキサス州サンアントニオ生まれた。祖父がミュージシャンだったことから、幼少から音楽に親しみ、５歳にしてギター、マンドリン、フィドルなどをマスター、神童と持て囃される。子供ながらにカントリー界の大物たちのバックもつとめ、11歳で初めてレコーディングを経験。そして、高校時代にはブルースやR&Bといった黒人音楽に目覚め、地元で初めてのR&Bバンドを結成し、活動を続ける。64年、折りからのブリティッシュ・インヴェージョンに強い影響を受けたサームは、サー・ダグラス・クインテットを結成し、“カウボーイmeetsビートルズ”風なシングル、「シーズ・アバウト・ア・ムーヴァー」を大ヒットさせた。73年には、ボブ・ディラン、ドクター・ジョン、フラーコ・ヒメネスなど、バック・グラウンドの異なるミュージシャンが一堂に会したソロ・アルバム『ダグ・サム＆バンド』を発表。ブルースやR&Bを呑み込んだバック・トゥ・ルーツな名作に仕立てあげている。80年代に入ってもバンド活動とソロ活動を並行させながら、良質なアルバムを次々に発表し、90年代にはテクス・メクス界のオール・スターバンド、テキサス・トーネイドスを結成し、グラミー賞を受賞した。
    しかし99年心臓発作で倒れ、他界。だが、アメリカン・ルーツ・ミュージックを自分の音楽に吸収し、昇華させていくサームの姿勢は、ウィルコやアンクル・テュペロといったオルタナティヴ・カントリーの中に確かに継承されている。
