    Blue Magicブルー・マジック

    ブルー・マジックといえば「サイドショウ」。ファルセット・ヴォーカル／分厚いハーモニー／華麗なるストリングス、といったスウィート・ソウルの条件を満たしたこのスロウ・ナンバーは、ソウル〜R&B史上もっとも美しい曲の１つである。
    フィラデルフィアで結成されたブルー・マジックは73年にデビューを飾る。翌年、前述の「サイドショウ」が大ヒットを記録し、初アルバム『ブルー・マジック』を制作。＜フィラデルフィア・インターナショナル＞のお抱えミュージシャン集団、M.F.S.B.のノーマン・ハリスをプロデュースに迎え、起伏に富んだオーケストレーションが施されたこの作品は、ダンサーとバラードがバランスよく並ぶ正統派フィリー・ソウルの傑作に仕上がった。
    以後も、ファンクやディスコといったその時々のトレンドに対応しながら、“愛の世界”を貫いていく。80年代後半には、打ち込みとスウィートネスを結実させた『From Out of the Blue』という佳作をモノにして、現在も活動中である。
