Billy Strayhornビリー・ストレイホーン
デューク・エリントン楽団に40年に入団したビリー・ストレイホーン。以降、亡くなる67年まで、エリントンの分身的存在として作編曲に多大なる献身を示した。「こんなん出ましたけど〜」とエリントンが曲のスケッチやアイディアをストレイホーンに渡すと、次の日の朝にはビッグ・バンドの譜面になっている——という塩梅で、「Take the A Train」「Lush Life」「Lotus Blossom」などの名曲が次々と誕生していったわけだ。全音階の増音程を多用した、ドビュッシー〜ラヴェル的な書法が特徴。あの重厚＋荘厳＋土着的香り（＋ウィット）が渾然一体となったエリントンの音楽は、ジャズの至宝であり、それはストレイホーン無しには成り立たなかったのであ〜る。
