    個人的にはデビュー・アルバム『The Last Hurrah』のジャケットが衝撃的だった。ボサボサ・ヘアーに無精髭、まるでアルコール中毒患者のような虚ろな瞳。一目見て並じゃない生活を送って来た、とわかるインパクトの強いルックスに非常に興味を覚えたものだ。
    ビーヴァー・ネルソンはティーンエイジャーでミュージシャンを志し、音楽都市オースチンに上京。２回に渡ってメジャー・レーベルと契約するものの、作品をリリースさせてもらえず、苦汁を舐め続けた。しかし98年、インディーズながらも『The Last Hurrah』を発表。骨太なルーツ・ロック・サウンドと枯れた風味の味わい深い歌唱は、多くのリスナーの琴線に触れまくった。続く00年の『Little Brother』では、前作をさらに深化させ、中期ローリング・ストーンズを彷彿させるカントリー・ロックからサザン・ソウルを思わせるディープなバラードまで、滋味に富んだサウンドを展開。最近のシンガー・ソングライターの作品としては出色の出来となった。
    無骨なまでに己を貫き通すネルソンは、米国ミュージック・シーンでも貴重な存在といえる。信頼に値するアーティストであろう。
