左利きのギターを抱えたレディ・ソウル・シンガー。テキサス出身だが、ヒューイ・Ｐ・モーのプロデュースの下、ニューオリンズで録音された「You'll Lose A Good Thing」（62年）が有名だ。タフでセンチメンタルなルイジアナ特有のサウンドに、憂いを秘めたハスキー・ヴォイスが絡み、豊潤極まりないスワンプ・ポップ風味のソウルが出来上がった。武骨な味だが繊細なダシが効いていて、味わうほどに旨みが出る。
その後も＜アトランティック＞などに録音を残すが、70年代には一時低迷。しかし80年代に入るとここ日本を中心に再評価熱が高まり、84年には来日公演も果たした。
90年代にはコンスタントにアルバムも発表し、今も現役で活動中だ。
