    50年代以降に発売されたジャズ・レコードの裏ジャケットを見れば、かなりの確率でそこにアート・ファーマーの名前を発見できるだろう。
    45年、ファーマーはロサンジェルスに足を一歩踏み入れた途端に精力的な活動を始めた。トランペットとフリューゲルホーンを操る彼の即興演奏は鬼神を思わせるほどでありながらも、メロディアスであることを決して忘れない。また、そのプレイはベニー・カーターやライオネル・ハンプトン、そしてクインシー・ジョーンズなどのバンドに躍動感を与えた。ニューヨークではホレス・シルヴァーやジェリー・マリガン、そしてベニー・ゴルソンなどをはじめとする数限りないミュージシャンたちと活動。60年代前半以降は自らのリーダー・グループを率いていたが、それでも友人たちのセッションにちょくちょく顔を出し続けていた。
    そのサウンドの魅力は、ジャズの冬の時代とされる70年代でも、彼にはメジャー・レーベルとのレコード契約があったという事実からも窺えるだろう。50年という歳月が過ぎた今日も、この男はまったく衰えを感じさせない。不思議でたまらない話だ。
