    Z.Z. Hillズィーズィーヒル

    80年代を代表するサザン・ソウル〜ブルース・シンガーであり、＜マラコ＞レーベル大躍進のきっかけを作った張本人である。
    Z.Z.ヒルは、もともとはボビー・ブランド・フォロワーとして、ウエスト・コーストを中心に60年代より活動を行っていた。70年代後半までに数十枚のアルバムをリリースし、実力派シンガーとして謳われるが人気の方はイマイチ。しかし82年に＜マラコ＞からリリースした「Down Home Blues」が大ヒットを記録し、47歳にして遅咲きのブレイクを果たす。コクと気迫が凝縮された彼の歌声は、南部の黒人中年層を中心に支持され、この成功をきっかけとして、リトル・ミルトンやジョニー・テイラーなどのベテラン勢の復活ブームが起こった。しかし栄光を手中に収めた直後の84年、Z.Z.ヒルは心臓麻痺でこの世を去ってしまう。
    日本人には濃すぎる音楽かもしれないが、その圧倒的歌唱力に触れれば、なぜ黒人たちに支持されたのかが理解できるだろう。いまだに南部では、ジュークボックスの常連らしい。
