    Yabby Youヤビー・ユー

    本名ヴィヴィアン・ジャクソン。ヤビー・ユー（ヤビー・U）という名を使うことになったのは、彼のシングル「Conquering Lion」の中で繰り返される「Be you, be yabby yabby you」というフレーズをキング・タビーが好んだことに由来している。この「Conquering Lion」を後にリミックスしたものや、ビッグ・ユースがエネルギッシュなトースティングをかぶせたダブ・ヴァージョンは、レゲエ史上に残る名曲となった。ヤビー・Uは「Jesus Dread」のような曲で、キリスト教の理想とラスタのイメージやチャントを融合させ、ルーツ・レゲエの方向性に大きな影響を与えた。ジャマイカNo.１の実力を誇る強者ミュージシャンが奏でるオルガン、パーカッション、ホーン、地響きするようなベース・ラインで綿密に構成された、うっとりするようなバック・トラックの上を漂う、滑らかでスピリチュアルなヴォーカル。プロデューサーとしても、新人の発掘と育成に力を注ぎ、マイケル・プロフェットやトニー・タフらをスターに育て上げた。ヘビィでちょっと暗めの名曲は、彼の手によるものが多い。
