    マイケル・シェンカーを輩出したグループとして有名だが、70年代前半のブリティッシュ・ハード・ロック黄金時代を代表する——とまでは言わないが、あの時代に彩りを添えた名バンドである。初期のメンバーには、後にホワイトスネイクの屋台骨を支えるバーニー・マーズデンもいた。初期は迷走が続くも、ドイツ人ギタリストのシェンカーを加え、レーベルをメジャーに変えてからは快進撃が続く。70年代初期のナンバー「ドクター・ドクター」や「ロック・ボトム」などは、その後もUFOだけでなくマイケル・シェンカー・グループでの定番ナンバーともなる。しかし、アメリカ制覇を目前にして精神的に脆弱だったシェンカーが蒸発。バンドは急遽、ウェールズ出身の名ギタリスト、ポール・チャップマンを代打に立てツアーを消化。その後、彼を正式メンバーとしクオリティの高いアルバムも制作するが、時代はすでにパンクへと移行しており、83年に解散した。その後は多くのハード・ロック・バンド同様、さまざまなメンバーが入れ替わり立ち替わりしながら再編。復活アルバムもリリースされている。　（小池清彦）
