Tony Joe Whiteトニー・ジョー・ホワイト
ルイジアナ出身、生粋の南部人であり、男の匂いがムンムンするシンガー・ソングライターだ。しかし、日本では小西康陽や田島貴男など、いわゆる洗練された人たちがフェイヴァリットと公言する存在。なぜなら、トニー・ジョー・ホワイトは単なる田舎者ではない。確かに濃厚なルーツ色を保持しながらも必要以上に泥臭さを強調せず、JBやスライといった同時代のファンク感覚を巧みに音楽性に取り込んでいるあたりがミソなのだ。代表曲はエルヴィス・プレスリーのTOP10ヒット「Polk Salad Annie（ポーク・サラダ・アニー）」、ブルック・ベントンの「Rainy Night in Georgia（レイニー・ナイト・イン・ジョージア）」、ダスティ・スプリングフィールドの「Willie and Laura Mae Jones（ウィリー＆ローラ・メイ・ジョーンズ）」が挙げられるが、60年代後半から70年代中頃にかけてのホワイト自身のソロ作も実にイイ。今もスワンプ・ロック・ファンからフリー・ソウル・ファンまで幅広い層に人気の高いアイテムである。
