    「これが本当にデビュー作？」と誰しもが腰を抜かした傑作アルバム『イントロデューシング・ザ・ハードライン・アコーディング・トゥ・テレンス・トレント・ダービー』で87年に登場した彼。60sソウル／R＆B／ゴスペルなどをそれまでになかったような、シャープで洗練されたポップ風に仕立て上げ、高品質なサウンド・プロダクション群と高音域が飛び抜けて美しいヴォーカリゼーション（もともとの声質はハスキーで野太い）を自信たっぷりに見せつけたシンガーである。
    62年、N.Y.生まれのマイアミ育ち。18歳でアメリカ陸軍に入隊し、ハイスクール時代からボクシングのズバ抜けたセンスを買われていたというユニークなキャリアを持つ（軍隊のなかでゴールデン・グラブ賞なるものも受賞したとか）。しかし、すべてに失望して遁走。遁走先のドイツにおいて、ザ・タッチというファンク・バンドで密やかに活動したあと、ソロ・デビューをするに至ったのである（これまたユニークな）。
    今まで着実に良質作品を発表している彼だが、そのビッグ・マウスっぷりとふてぶてしい態度が災いしてか、２ndアルバム『ニーザー・フィッシュ・ノア・フレッシュ』以降セールス的にはダウン。ファンクとロックをいい塩梅で織り交ぜた、気合い入りまくりの４thアルバム『TTDズ・ヴァイブレーター』で起死回生を図りはしたが、思った通りの結果は得られず、徐々に噂される機会も減り、仕舞いには音沙汰ナシな状態に……。しかしながら、どの作品においてもその練り上げられたサウンド・アレンジ／ファンキーなギターの鳴り／幾度となく爆発するヴォーカル・ワーク……は感服すべき素晴らしさ。聴き込むほどに彼の完璧主義っぷりがひしひしと伝わってくる感じである。また、その整った顔立ちと鍛え上げられた体躯に、文句をつける女性は誰ひとりとしていないだろう（たぶん）。
    その後、彼はサナンダ・マイトレイヤと改名。01年に心機一転、久々のニュー・アルバム『ワイルド・カード』を発表した。
