    初期ジャズのパイオニアである黒人ピアニスト。
    彼は、スムーズなタイム感と明るく美しいハーモニーを重視した、まるで太陽にキラめきながら流れる水のような演奏をみせる。耽美であり優美……。その点が、30年代ジャズ——黒人色が強く、ブルージィでスウィング感あふれるスタイルが盛隆を極める中で、彼を傑出させた理由の一つだろう（もちろん彼も抜群のスウィング感をもっている）。
    彼が人種を問わず当代の気鋭プレイヤーと演奏した足跡のひとつは、35年にベニ—・グッドマン（cl）のバンド（初めての白人黒人混成グループ）に参加したことが挙げられる。そこでのジーン・クルーパ（ds）とのトリオは当時の話題をかっさらった。また、それと並行して＜ブランズウィック・レーベル＞において、自らがリーダーとなってセッション・レコーディングを行い、多くのドラマを生み出している。ビリー・ホリデイ（vo）をはじめ、レスター・ヤング（ts）、ハリー・ジェームス（tp）など、その時期に活躍していたスター・プレイヤーが参加し、30年代ジャズのひとつの成果として一大絵巻をくりひろげたのだ。
