    Talib Kweliタリブ・クウェリ

    スキルフルやテクニカルという言葉で語られるラッパーは多いが、タリブ・クウェリほどそれらの言葉が似合うラッパーも少ないだろう。それに加え、“リリカル”や“コンシャス”という形容詞の冠もこの男にはよく似合う。
    モス・デフ（ブラック・スター）やDJハイ・テック（リフレクション・エターナル）とデュオを組んでいたことも記憶に新しいタリブ・クウェリ。そもそもこの聞きなれない名前が意味するのは、Talib＝生徒など（アラブ語）、Kweli＝知識など（ガーナ語）とのこと。名は体を表すではないが、実に“らしい”ネーミングである。
    前述のブラック・スターとしてデュオ唯一のアルバム『ブラック・スター』（98年）を、リフレクション・エターナルとしても何枚かのアルバムを残しているが、ソロとしては02年にリリースした『クオリティ』が初となる。その後、04年には２nd『ビューティフル・ストラグル』を発表。モス・デフがクリエイティヴィティという性欲にも似たモンモンと湧き出でる感覚を“独往”というかたちで昇華したのに対して（04年の『ニュー・デンジャー』）、クウェリはこのどうしようもない感覚をマジョリティというものに預けることでコントロールしようとした。その行為の結果（ツケ）は次作で如実に表れるだろう。
