    89年に発表されたシングル「キープ・オン・ムーヴィン」は、大げさでもなんでもなく、ただ衝撃だった。ジャジー・B率いるソウルIIソウルは、ソウル／ハウスのエレメントを含有しながらも、アメリカン・ブラックとはまったく異なるリズムを誇るサウンドで、たちまち多くの人々を心酔させた。太くうねるベース・ラインと、硬質でほんのりルーズなドラム・プログラミング、そしてキャロン・ウィーラーの狂おしいほどに艶やかな歌声——この延々と浸っていたくなるようなグルーヴは「グランド・ビート」と名づけられ、最新型のダンス・フォームとしてクラブ・ピープルに甘い魔法をかけたのである。と同時に、数え上げるのも躊躇われるほどのフォロワーも生んだのだ。
    以降、さまざまなヴォーカリストを駆使しながら、レゲエ／ファンク／ジャズなどのリズムをどんどん吸収。しかし、一貫として歌心を主軸においている辺りがアッパレ、である。
    97年のアルバム『タイム・フォー・チェンジ』以降、活動は沈静化しているようだが、また大人をウットリと酩酊気分にさせるような楽曲を届けて欲しいものだ。そう思ってるのは筆者だけではないはず！
